About

The Berio project offers the first historically informed interpretation of Sequenza VII.

In a note about Chemin IV, Berio wrote:

The best way to analyze and comment on a musical work has always been to write another based on the materials of the original work. It thus becomes the object of a creative exploration that is at once an analysis, a commentary and an extension. [...] Perhaps this is a tribute to the idea that nothing we complete, in itself, is ever finished. Even the 'finished' work is ritual and commentary on something that came before, something that will come after, like a question that doesn't provoke an answer, but still a commentary, and another question “.

My work on Sequenza VII follow this line of thought, proposing a diversity of media (publications, creations, workshops, new teaching aids, performances), as many commentaries and open perspectives, on a work that carries within it all the challenges of modern music.

In this year of Berio's centenary, the aim is twofold: pay tribute to one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, and to help everyone feel entitled to Sequenza VII, thus helping to bring this masterpiece to life beyond the circle of specialized oboists and musicians.
